The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today that total employment in the United States stood at 2,733,500 at the end of the third quarter, 1.5 percent more than in the same period last year. Nationwide, employment rose 2.1 percent, or 1,743,000 jobs, compared with a 3.2 percent increase in July and a 2 percent increase in June, totaling 2 million jobs.
Of the remaining nine agglomerations, 12 lost jobs year-on-year in the third quarter, with the rate of job losses in 7 of these areas above the national average of 1.5% for the same period last year. The remaining nine areas ranged from 366,600 in Chicago, Naperville and Elgin to 4,500 in Atlanta, 2,300 in New York City and 1,000 in Philadelphia. In the industrial sector, job losses ranged from 128,700 in Chicago to 50,400 in Georgia and from 60,800 in Los Angeles to 30,200 in San Francisco. They had the highest rates of job losses in all industries and sectors, from 32,900 in Baltimore, Baltimore - Washington, D.C., and San Jose, Calif., to 128 and 700 in Detroit, respectively, and job losses in each of the nine areas ranged from 12,100 in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Philadelphia - Wilkes - Barre, Pa., to 52 and 50 in Milwaukee.
Camden Metropolitan Division reported a 41,200 job loss for the year, representing 18 percent of employment in the region. New York had the biggest job losses of all sectors, with 62,600 jobs, followed by Los Angeles (251,900), Newark and Jersey City Each of those companies added 1,800 jobs, and San Francisco, Oakland and Hayward each lost 2,500 and 1,500 jobs, respectively. In the industrial sector, New Yorkers lost the highest rate of jobs of any metropolitan area in the third quarter, from 2.2 percent in Chicago to 3.1 percent, after Los Angeles, Los Francisco and Oakland-Hayward.
Regional Commissioner Sheila Watkins said the decline was largely due to job losses in the industrial sector but also in other sectors. Moreover, this month's establishment survey included reports that returned from reporting positive employment to reporting zero employment, while reports of negative employment did not.
The BLS continues to review the estimation and methodology for the establishment survey, including the use of data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (CES) birth and death model. For the preliminary estimates in July and August, CES made changes to the birth and death models and included some parts of these reports in the estimates.
