Abington Junior High School Reviews

Abington schools are excellent I had two go through the elementry schools and JH and High School. There is only one problem as I know there are in many schools. The Bullies get away with things that other students can't get away with. And if you are a football player you can be stupid, a bully and still can't do amy wrong. Otherwise a great school district.

I was told that this was a safe, good school for my children to learn in; however, I found out that the school is lacking in discipline. The kids are involved in drug use, gang violence and very racist. Children have taken weapons to school, push other kids while the teachers stand and watch. This school campares to schools in Philadelphia in dangers that children have to go through everyday, the only thing is that this school is not in Philadelphia

I really didn't like elementary school. But now, in my 2nd year at AJHS, there are, what a shock, times when I do actually like school. The teachers are amazing; quite a few seem almost like friends whom we joke around with, but highly respect and learn from. Many of my teachers have been dynamic, exciting, funny, and creative. The biggest drawback about AJHS is the students. I feel sometimes like we've tried to grow up too quickly, attempted to become adults when we don't know what that is. Sex, drugs, and rock n' roll is, sadly, a large theme in the social aspect here. However, I suspect that this might be the same in many public schools. AJHS is a wonderful school, the curriculum is quite good, there are dozens of afterschool clubs, and the teachers I have I will come back and visit many years later.

The teachers are extremely accessible to parents, very understanding of the children's developmental challenges, and very energetic and creative. Classes can be large and most honors classes have 30 students. Students who are self starters will obtain a great education. There are many talented and smart children. The school offers diversity and needs more character education and diversity training. Administration is very accessible to parents but lacks vision and the ability to create a distinct culture of social excellence among staff and students. The guidance department is useful and parents should stay on top of their services. There are very good extracurricular activities. Parent involvement is definitely present but there are few parents who are progressively involved in the quality of education and socialization in the school. There are some innovative parent initiatives for children of color. AJHS is serious about safety but has improvement opportunities for respect and self esteem.

My daughter started Abington Junior High this year. I think it's probably an exceptional school (academically), for those children ready for this kind of competitiveness, and involvement. But, coming from a very small school to such an enormous student body, (in my opinion) is just so overwhelming to soon. I hear about fights and drugs already, and this is only seventh grade. My daughter is in all the honors classes, and has made the distinguished honor role for the first two marking periods. And as thrilled as we are with that, we are still considering a much smaller school for next year. We fear for the safety, that does not seem to be there for these (still very young) children.

This school is not very good. The kids are not always friendly, and the education is not great at all. The campus definitely needs something done about it. Do not send your kids to this school.

the teachers are great and have excellent techniques. the chorus and band students are at a high and great activities go on for the music students.

Abington is a great school. There are many fights though. Its a really good school though in extra curricular activities and education. I had many good friends there.

Programming is varied and includes music/art and extracurriculars too.. However, having had 2 children go through the school, I'd have to say that there is an level of disinterest in assisting the average child... Seems they focus on the really bright, dedicated learners and the troubled learners... middle of the road kids are lost in the shuffle bound to lose interest and focus on learning. Test scores are high because they take valuable classroom time to teach the tests, More time might be more effective to the entire student body if spent on creative efforts and diversity.

Abington Junior High School has proven itself to be a provider of quality education in the area. Although it has a very large student body,(approximately 1900 students), it still manages to maintain the feel of a community school. Smaller learning 'Neighborhoods' help foster a more intimate atmosphere, and help to ease the transition between the small elementary schools that the students came from and the larger Junior High. The faculty is well qualified and very enthusiastic, helping students to become more focused and successful in their studies. Academic standards are very high, and test scores as well. A lively offering of extra curricular acivities offers something for just about everyone, and administration and staff highly encourage students to participate. Excellent art, music and theatre programs are well supported. Overall, Abington Junior High School offers an exceptional educational opportunity.

I believe abington to have excellent test scores and the teachers are very helpful for the most part. They have many fundraisers and are always looking to make things better for thir students. The school has many clubs and classes that allow the children to express their musical talents, along with drama classes and they also have annual plays. Sports are year round and they give all children a fair chance.

Ever see the movie 'Mean Girls'? That movie perfectly depicts the feminine culture at this school. We have seen girls who have been 'nice' since pre-school change dramatically to conform and fit in. The administration turns a blind eye and chalks it up to 'the age', probably because of the huge size of the school. Also, while the academics in the Honors classes offers a resonable education, if your child can not be in one of these classes, the only alternative is to be in the 'regular' classes, which are uninspiring at best; kids that were having difficulty in elelmentary school have little problem achieving 'A's in these classes. Even if you have a bright girl, you should reconsider sending her to this school if she is at all sensitive, or reactive to peer pressure. The academics do not outweigh the social pitfalls and emotional problems which result.

Wish they better addressed social problems like bullying and teasing, etc.

I really enjoyed this school. The teachers were the best. The after school activities were fun and there were a lot. However, many teachers had there favorites and catered to their needs, I hated that. School discipline didn't exist. Otherwise not a bad school at all.

The school has ok academics but it allows students to graduate without challenging them emotionally or creatively. In other words, students will find the culture quite bland! Creativity is lacking in this environment. The atmosphere does not tolerate other cultures! Former teacher
