Independence Hall is the standing expression of Philadelphia’s place in the heart of American history. Though the city itself and Independence National Park change all around it, Independence Hall remains a classic and solid tribute to liberty amongst the progressive and equality-driven population of Philadelphia.
Independence Hall is the site of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution. Additionally, Independence Hall and the surrounding Old City area acted as the center of home, business and political life for America’s founding fathers.
The creation and ratification of the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were especially significant due to the guarantee of rights and freedoms entitled to American citizens and the development and implementation of the checks and balances systems, allowing each of the three governmental branches of the government to maintain limited oversight of the others.
Originally serving as the Pennsylvania State House, Independence Hall now stands as an iconic image of freedom and liberty at the heart of Philadelphia, once America’s capital city. Affected by renovation and then restoration to its original appearance, Independence Hall’s interior contains the signing room, outfitted in bold blue and green shades. It’s easy for most visitors to imagine the debates over the historical documents and the resulting eventual historic signings.
Although the front face of Independence Hall is most well-recognized, there is plenty to see on the other side of the hall facing the park. During summer months, re-enactors educate students and tourists about the historical events taking place in Philadelphia and at Independence Hall while dressed in full garb.
Along with the knowledgeable park rangers, these re-enactors work to create living history. At times, visitors will also see Ben Franklin and Betsy Ross taking a stroll through the area.
Standing boldly in the center of the park behind Independence Hall is Commodore John Barry, the Irish-born American who founded the United States Navy intent on holding America’s own against the militarily superior British naval force.
Visitors wanting to tour Independence Hall should stop at the Independence Visitors Center to purchase tickets in advance. Although tickets are free, they are required (even for infants) due to security concerns. Check out the Independence Visitors Center for more information.
