friendrock's Bio

"We consider ourselves Philadelphia's 'Funnest' Party Band and challenge any other band to a 'Fun Off'. BRING IT!"

Originally a studio project, Franzschubert was created in 2002 by musician/composer Andrew Lipke and artist/musician Ian Jarvis as an experiment in modern music. By creating each song as an artistic collaboration, it became possible to explore a wide variety of styles and influences while maintaining a consistent, yet unique sound – dubbed "Friend Rock." The result was BUMP, the first full length album recorded and produced entirely by Franzschubert.

In order to exercise their passion for live-wire entertainment, Lipke & Jarvis have hand chosen several of Philadelphia's best musicians – now known as The Schuubs. Beyond just playing original songs and covers from their repertoire, they have developed tons o wildly interactive games. A fan favorite, The Great Schuub Challenge, invites the crowd to call out any song imaginable for the band to perform... the band always triumphs. Combined with limbo contests, hula hoop competitions and other slightly "retro" audience participation for prizes, the Franzschubert experience is truly a contemporary variety show.

While the foundation of each song is rock, Franzschubert’s ambitious sound is a modern blend of musical styles ranging from calypso to techno, motown to metal, hip-hop to hillbilly. Much of the music manages to restrain itself in small, infectious explosions of melodic, often anthemi sing-alongs like Spanish Girl and Papa of the Baby. Longer songs such as Dance Planet create greater atmosphere, while amusing little ditties like Mountain Holler round out the mix.

Currently writing & recording music for their next album, Franzschubert is hard at work keeping all the cool kids giggling and whistling.
