Cuba Libre and Rum Bar: Exotic food and atmosphere

Feb 7, 2010

Cuba Libre Restaurant and Rum Bar in Philadelphia is a popular dinner destination in downtown Philly, boasting authentic Cuban food and dozens of varieties of rum in a fun, festive atmosphere. The art, atmosphere and music is celebratory of Cuban culture. An exotic ambiance descends on the restaurant, making patrons feel as if they've actually crossed the ocean and traveled to the island.

Start off your Cuba Libre experience with an order of papas rellenas-- roasted garlic potato croquettes with beef picadillo, or some Havana ceviche misto-- plump shrimp cocktail, bay scallops and fresh tuna with tomato salsita and saltine coconut salad.

Main entrees include items like Suntanned Salmon-- a fillet of North Atlantic salmon with honey-mango glaze and candied cashews; roasted Mahi Mahi paella with shrimp, mussels and squid with black rice; lime-garlic marinated chicken breast with steamed young mustard greens, black bean croqueta and mango sweet-and-sour gravy; and grilled skirt steak with roasted garlic mashed potatoes and escabeche salad.

A variety of hot sandwiches are also available. The El Cubano is a delightful combination of sour orange-marinated pork loin, garlic mojo, ham, Swiss cheese, sliced sweet pickles and brown mustard on grilled bread is a favorite among frequenters. Other sandwich options include the Miami Frita, a burger made with chorizo sausage, mojo de ajo, and vegetables on fresh grilled bread, and the Guava BBQ rib sandwich with criollo slaw.

Reservations aren't required at Cuba Libre, but they are helpful. Dress is business casual.
