Mexican Post

Feb 5, 2010

Care to escape the long waits and overpriced menu options sometimes prevalent for the lunch and after work crowds in Old City Philadelphia? Check out Mexican Post. This establishment seems rather subtle from its Chestnut Street façade, but Mexican Post boasts a lengthy bar, separating the “just here for a drink” crowd from the dozen plus tables in the rear of the restaurant.

Mexican Post is a reliable lunch time establishment. The generous lunch menu is priced reasonably. Without an alcoholic beverage, diners can expect a full meal for $10.00 or less excluding tip.

Mexican Post offers a cool and relaxing atmosphere, presenting itself as a refuge from the stressful workday. Though dimly lit, the Post often displays track lighting to provide light while maintaining the atmosphere. The décor is standard Mexican and tasteful. Instead of featuring walls plastered in Mexican paintings and artwork, the presented décor is less crowded and more authentic, allowing diners to focus on their company, conversations and meals. Customers cannot hear street sounds and other outside noises and the establishment lacks blaring music that can obscure conversation.

Tables, silverware and the bar top are clean. Everything is polished and free of sticky residue. When not busy serving, the wait staff focus on the cleanliness of the restaurant while keeping an eye on the diners’ needs.

The seclusion allowed in this restaurant is perfect for those looking for a refuge to discuss office gossip or for a quiet lunch date. The tables are spread far enough apart and angled to encourage eavesdrop-free conversations—a rarity in the city.

The wait staff at Mexican Post are extremely jocular and welcoming, delivering beverages and meals with efficiency. Speedy servers never look away from a customer in need of a refill and the kitchen is completely compliant when it comes to special requests.

The food itself is very fresh. The meal starts with chips (always crisp) and salsa (always chilled). Entrees include seafood, beef, chicken and cheese-based selections and the chefs are always willing to prepare entrees in a vegetarian fashion. (Vegetarians can also order vegetarian entrees such as the bean taco salad). Quesadillas in particular are served sizzling hot in a skillet dish—you won’t find plastic-textured cheese here.

The Mexican Post’s menu includes traditional Mexican dishes, American classics such as the cheeseburger and some fun, flirtatious foods such as tortilla soup, making this an ideal lunch spot for groups with diverse preferences.
